Route 66 Road Trip

So, I want to plan a road trip this summer with my friend. Has anyone ever done this before or know anything to recommend? I will take any and all recommendations. Places to see, places to stay, places to eat at. I want to map out my trip before I go. Please post a comment. Thanks

    I have done from TX (hit it in Amarillo) to Barstow (where I head north) A couple times. I have notes that I could send you. We just went over Christmas including the Grand Canyon. Where are you starting/stopping?

    I was planning on starting in Chicago and ending in California
